C-N returns to Holt to battle Buffs

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (6-1) stays out of conference for a Saturday afternoon affair with the Milligan Buffaloes (7-4) at 2 p.m. inside the walls of Holt Fieldhouse.

The matchup is the first time the teams will have faced off since Carson-Newman beat the Buffs 110-86 back in 2008.

Milligan has won four in a row – all at home.  It comes off a 64-62 win over Asbury a week ago.  Meanwhile, Carson-Newman is two days removed from a 79-51 road win at Hiwassee.

"They've got multiple three point shooters," Carson-Newman head men's basketball coach Chuck Benson said. "We've got to make them uncomfortable with our pressure and trapping packages."

Milligan has four players averaging double figures, led by Tyler Devault's 13.4 a game and Torian Sitton's 12.3 a game.

"This'll be as tough an opponent as we've seen considering they've won four in a row and five of their last six," Benson said.

Carson-Newman will be without the services of leading scorer Antoine Davis (Rustburg, Va.) and Corbin Jackson (Rutledge, Fla.), who will both be out with foot injuries.  However, Ish Sanders (Cleveland, Tenn.) and his 17.6 points a game remain.

Sanders needs 27 points to crack 1,000 in his career in an Eagle uniform.

Through seven games, the Eagles have used four different starting lineups and each has a victory on its belt.

That makes Benson feel a bit better about missing two key cogs.

"We've got more juniors and seniors than we've had in past years," Benson said. "I like the idea, especially early (in the season), of getting different combinations of guys out on the court to start games."

Carson-Newman and Milligan tip at 2 p.m. Saturday.  Coverage on the Coca-Cola Eagle Sports Network begins at 1:45 p.m. on air on 106.3 ESPN Radio the Zone (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com.
