| Civic Engagement Policy |
At Carson-Newman University, the Athletic Department is committed to developing servant-leaders who engage faithfully in their communities. Civic and community engagement is central to the mission of Carson-Newman and is embedded in the core values of our athletics program. Our student-athletes, coaches, and staff are called to use their gifts to serve others, reflecting the University’s commitment to preparing students for lives of purpose and service.
Per NCAA legislation, all student-athletes must be provided the opportunity to participate in a civic engagement activity. To ensure this requirement is met, each team will be given one day off from countable athletically related activities (CARA) for civic engagement programming. This day must occur within 15 days before or after or on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November (Election Day).
Activities may take place on the Carson-Newman campus, in the Jefferson City/Mossy Creek community, or through other approved outreach opportunities. While this initiative is mandated by the NCAA, it is embraced at Carson-Newman as an opportunity for student-athletes to model Christ-centered servant leadership, foster meaningful relationships, and make a positive impact in society.
17.1.6.8 Required Day Off – Civic Engagement.
All countable athletically related activities (per Bylaw 17.02.1) shall be prohibited on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. An institution shall develop civic engagement policies, which must address opportunities available to student-athletes for civic engagement, through a collaborative process involving student-athletes, coaches and senior athletics department staff members to ensure student-athletes are provided adequate opportunities, resources and programming to participate in civic engagement activities.
