Carson-Newman Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 1989

Class of 1989

Ken Sparks (1968) -- A wide receiver during the mid 60’s, Sparks has made his mark in coaching. His Carson-Newman Eagles dominated the 1980’s by winning the South Atlantic Conference and NAIA National Championship on several occasions. Ken was voted by his peers as National Coach of the Year.

W. A. Wright (1968) -- Catcher on the 1965 National Championship Baseball Team, Wright earned All-American honors in 1966, 1967, and 1968. Following his graduation, W. A. played professional baseball. He also earned Honorable Mention All-American honors as a guard on the Eagle Basketball team in 1968.

Carl Torbush (1974) -- One of the few Carson-Newman lettermen to earn All-American honors in two sports. Torbush was an All-American linebacker in 1972 and 1973. As a catcher on the baseball squad, he was tabbed as All-American in 1972, 1973 and 1974.

Charles A. “Buddy” Catlett (1954) -- Mr. Tennis at Carson-Newman during the early 50’s, Catlett won every conference singles match during his four year career. He and his doubles partner were also crowned conference champions all four years.
