Class of 1998

Hubert Ashe (1953) -- A two sport athlete, Ashe earned eight letters in football and baseball. He was Honorable Mention All-American on the gridiron leading the nation in punting and was an outstanding runner and passer. Ashe played professional baseball as a pitcher and centerfielder.

Bobby Black (1965) -- The Carson-Newman football media guide described Black as “a fine offensive blocker but excels on defense.” Excel he did earning Little All-American honors, as well as, News Sentinel All-Star, All-Conference, and team awards. Black also played baseball while attending Carson-Newman.

Ira Dance (1923) -- Tabbed by a Knoxville newspaper as the original “Fighting Parson”, Dance once hit an opponent so hard that it left him unconscious for hours. Ira was described as one of the biggest and best players of his time at 195 lbs. Following graduation, he was widely acclaimed for his ministry by the Tennessee Baptist Convention.

Fay Bowman Evans (1929) -- An athlete, educator, and innovator, Fay Evans distinguished herself in all three areas. She was an outstanding scorer, rebounder, and defensive specialist at Carson-Newman and later played semi-pro basketball. Evans taught, coached, administered, and established athletic programs in Roane County, Tennessee.

Tommy Everette (1970) -- Recruited out of Gibbs High School, Tommy “Goose” Everett was a four year basketball starter. He was named All-VSAC four years and All-American in 1970. Everett complete his stellar career with 2,365 points and 1,179 rebounds.

Sylvia Hatchell (1974) -- A basketball and volleyball athlete at the college, Hatchell is the only basketball coach to have won national championships in the NCAA, the AIAW, and NAIA. Recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of Carson-Newman, she has been named National Coach of the Year and has received the FCA National Team Sportsmanship Award.

Tommy Jones (1970) -- One of the most talented athletes to wear the orange and blue, Jones was an All-American in football and baseball. He still holds several individual Carson-Newman football records. Drafted by the Baltimore Colts and Boston Red Sox, Jones signed with Boston as a pitcher.
