A 1997 graduate of the University of Tennessee, Dr. Matthew Rappe′ earned a bachelor's degree in Biology. He went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 2001. He then completed four years of orthopaedic residency at the University of Florida, serving as chief resident his fifth year. Finalizing his orthopaedic training, Dr. Rappé completed a one-year orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship with James R. Andrews, M.D., at the American Sports Medicine Institute and Alabama Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in July 2007. 

As a sports medicine specialist, Dr. Rappé specializes in arthroscopy and the treatment of all sports-related injuries, as well as the open and arthroscopic treatment of the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle. In addition, he holds certification in the treatment of cartilage injuries in the knee with articular cartilage implantation.

Dr. Rappés current research focus is directed at the treatment of articular cartilage injuries in the knee and shoulder. He has co-authored book chapters concerning the management and treatment of both rotator cuff tears in throwing athletes as well as the management and treatment of knee ligamentous injuries. His research areas also include osteochondral injuries in throwing athletes as well as the use of allograft tendon in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Active in several professional medical organizations, Dr. Rappé's affiliations include memberships in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of America, Southern Orthopaedic Association and the American Medical Association. In addition to his involvement in research and professional organizations, Dr. Rappé also serves as an orthopaedic consultant to the Tennessee Smokies, Carson Newman College and the University of Tennessee.

In his leisure time, Dr. Rappe’ enjoys fly-fishing, hunting and other outdoor recreation activities. He and and his wife, Brandy, also a University of Tennessee graduate, have a son.
