Eagles soar north to compete in Tiffin Dragon Invite

Randall Freeman Interview

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn—The Carson-Newman indoor track and field will be competing in the Tiffin Dragon Invite on Saturday in Tiffin, Ohio in what will be one of the final meets of the indoor regular season schedule for the Eagles.

"I expect great things out of our team this weekend," senior multi-event specialist Randall Freeman (Chattanooga, Tenn.) said. "This will be a really competitive meet and I believe that will bring out the best in us."

Tiffin, whose men's team boasts the third-best ranking in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll, welcome a Carson-Newman club that has already eight provisionally national qualifiers in 10 events.

The Lady Dragons, who also present a respectable 30th-best position in the national polls, will be teaming up with their men's team this weekend in welcoming some of the best competition Division II has to offer.

The Carson-Newman women's team secured its program-best's 56th-spot when the USTFCCCA week three rankings were released earlier this week and the men's spot at No.3 in the Southeast Region marked the highest-seeded South Atlantic Conference program in the poll.

"I believe that with the strong competition, we will produce a lot of good marks and bring our times down," Freeman added. "Hopefully, we can have some more people qualify nationally this weekend and secure some places that we have already provisionally qualified for in other meets this season."

Tiffin will also field one of the nation's fastest sprinters in Lamar Hargrove. The Cincinnati, Ohio native is a former national champion in the men's 200m dash, as well as the 60m dash.

"The great thing about this meet is it will give us a chance as a team to see where we match up against some of the elite programs in the nation," coach David Needs said of the Tiffin Dragon Invite. "It's not every day that you can go up against the third-best team in the nation on the men's side. We look forward to the challenge."
