Carson-Newman Women’s And Men’s Cross Country Finish 14th and 19th, Respectively At The 2009 NCAA Division II Southeast Region Championship

WINGATE, N.C. – The Carson-Newman College Men’s And Women’s Cross Country Teams completed their 2009 seasons with top 20 finishes in the 2009 NCAA Division II Southeast Region Championship held Saturday morning at Wingate University. The Lady Eagles finished 14th while the C-N men came in 19th place.

Columbus State took home the Women’s team title, and Lenoir-Rhyne’s Kate Griewisch (Banner Elk, N.C.) was named regional champion, as she clocked a 22:35 over the 6K course.

Carson-Newman was led by junior Catelyn Dake (Knoxville, Tenn.) as she finished 53rd overall with a time of 26:08. Senior Cara Hawkins (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) was 55th, posting a 26:13.

In addition to Columbus State, Queens (N.C.) qualified for the NCAA Championships, and Anderson (S.C.)’s Whitney Bishoff will join Griewisch as an individual in the national race.

On the men’s side, Queens placed five runners in the top 10 to advance to the NCAA Division II Championships. Oscar Ogwaro of Queens took home medalist honors, as he completed the 10K course in 31:14.

Junior Jonathan Madden (Franklin, Tenn.) paced the Eagles, running a 35:57 to finish 66th.

The Queens, Columbus State and Mars Hill men’s teams will represent the Southeast Region at the NCAA Championships later this month. UNC Pembroke’s Pardon Ndhlovu and Clayton State’s Fidelis Mutiso qualified as individuals for the men.
