SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Carson-Newman junior Meredith Nix (Walhalla, S.C.) finished eighth to lead the Lady Eagles to a third-place finish at the 2011 USC Upstate Cross Country Invitational, run Saturday morning in the Spartanburg area.

The race was the Eagles and Lady Eagles final tune-up before hosting the South Atlantic Conference Championships on Saturday at Panther Creek State Park in Morristown, Tenn.

The Lady Eagles finished second to host USC Upstate and Wofford, respectively, both are Division I. They beat Presbyterian and Newberry in the race.

Nix finished eighth with a time of 20:51 to lead the Lady Eagles, who ran without two of their top runners in Katie Hayes (Jackson, Tenn.) and Hannah Reese (Brandon, Miss.)

Junior Brooke Earhardt (Dickson, Tenn.) ran a 21:38 to finish 13th in the race.

Sophomore Amanda Bowman (Greeneville, Tenn.) added a 17th place finish with a 21:59, while senior Lauren Henry (Greeneville, Tenn.) finished 21st with a time of 21:59.

Junior Samantha McConeghy (Johnston, Iowa) was the fifth Lady Eagle finisher with a time of 22:36.

The Carson-Newman men finished 6th in a seven-team race.

Junior Angel Soriano (Weatherford, Tex.) led the Eagles finishing 18th with a time of 29:25. Freshman Luke Hall (Seymour, Tenn.) closed in 20th and sophomore Stephen Patton (Ooltewah, Tenn.) finished 28th.

Division I Presbyterian finished fifth and host USC Upstate won the race.
