JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman swim team hosted their dual meet of the fall at Maddox Pool on Friday night and they collected their third straight win by decimating the King (Tenn.) Tornado by a score of 328.50 to 72.50.
For the second straight meet, the Eagles won every event, and, dating back to their contest against Limestone on Oct. 15th, they've now won 62 consecutive races and 70 out of 72 this season.
"We tried to go undefeated in all the races tonight," coach Jordan Taylor said. "We had a couple of close battles there. King's swimmers were really pushing us. They broke some school record. We raced tough, we raced strong, especially considering the whole team is really tired and fatigued right now. To get a clean sweep and back it up with a lot of high position places meant a lot of points on the board. It gives up confidence going into our big meet in a couple weeks."
C-N began the night with a pair of strong performances in the women's and men's 400 medley relays. In the women's race, the combination of Ksenia Naydenova (Stary Oskol, Russia), Nancy Claire Smith (Franklin, Tenn.), Lexy Raybon (Sarasota, Fla.) and Elly Culp (West End, N.C.) took first place with a time of 4:07.13. In the mens' race, the C-N A team of Seth Hughes (Kingston, Tenn.), Landis Cranford (Greensboro, N.C.), Andrew Wheeler (Newnan, Ga.) and Sam Schechter (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished first with a time of 3:34.33, while the school's B team of Caleb Howell (Easley, S.C.), Ryland Darling (Arlington, Tenn.), Ryan Burcham (Lenior City, Tenn.) and Patrick McCarty (Bluff City, Tenn.) posted a time of 3:36.43 for second.
The Eagles continued their domination in the individual events. On the women's side, coach Taylor got victories from nine different swimmers. Leah Allen (Aranda, Australia) topped the field in the 1000 free by swimming a time of 10:47.10. Margaret Stansberry (Knoxville, Tenn.) clocked in at 1:56.81 to win the 200 free. Lisa Postma (Leiden, Holland) collected a win in the 50 free with a time of 24.72. Maggie Melhorn (Knoxville, Tenn.) picked up a victory in the 200 individual medley by hitting the wall at 2:12.40. Culp's time of 58.42 in the 100 fly earned her a win. Mary Northcutt's mark of 53.53 bested the competition in the 100 free. Regina Zipperer (Germantown, Tenn.) won the 100 back, swimming it in 1:01.39. Smith's time of 5:24.88 won her the 500 free and Gillian Cline's (Estill Springs, Tenn.) time of 1:09.83 was the best in the 100 breaststroke.
Marcelo Figueiredo (Porto Alegre, Brazil) had a banner day on the men's side. He won the first two individual events of the night, the 1000 free, clocking in at 9:51.78 and the 200 free, besting his competitors with a mark of 1:44.98. He later added a victory in the 500 free with a time of 4:45.82. The night also included a pair of wins for Josh Terrell (Lawrence, Kan.), first in the 200 individual medley with 1:57.45 and later in the 100 breaststroke, as he touched the wall in 59.63. Jonny Goss's (Heiskell, Tenn.) time of 21.49 in the 50 free was good enough to put him on top of the podium. Pijus MacKevicius (Kaunas, Lithuania) placed first in the 100 fly, finishing the event in 53.06. Ben McCrary (Bluff City, Tenn.) bested five other swimmers in the 100 free with a mark of 48.49 and Jon Lancaster (Ringgold, Ga.) captured the 100 back in 53.67.
The Eagles finished the night with wins in the women's and men's 400 free relays. The victorious women's team consisted of Postma, Stansberry, Melhorn and Northcutt and completed the race in 3:38.46. The men's team of Wheeler, Goss, Lancaster and McCrary captured the final race of the night with a time of 3:14.22.
Carson-Newman travels in Cincinnati in two weeks for the Mid-Season Invite hosted by the University of Cincinnati. This event is scheduled to take place on Nov. 17-19.
