INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA released its first regional rankings of the 2015-16 season Wednesday after and Carson-Newman is eighth in the Southeast Region that will help to determine the pairings for the national tournament.
The top eight teams in the region make the NCAA Tournament with three automatic bids going to the winners of the conference tournaments from the South Atlantic Conference, Conference Carolinas and the Peachbelt Conference. Games in the regional tournament will be played at the site of the No. 1 team.
Carson-Newman is 5-0 against the top 10 regionally-ranked teams with wins over No. 2 Columbus State, two over No. 4 Anderson (S.C.), and one win each against No. 5 Lander and No. 9 North Georgia.
The top seed in the region, Limestone, is the third-ranked team in the nation and hosted the regional tournament in 2015. The Saints have just one win over a regionally-ranked team in Anderson (S.C.) and have the 36th strength of schedule among 39 Southeast Region teams.
Columbus State is 5-3 against teams ranked in the region and have two remaining games against such foes.
Clayton State is 5-2 against the top-10 teams in the Southeast and have two contests left against teams ranked.
Anderson has zero wins in three chances against the top-ranked teams in the region with Lander holding a 3-3 record against teams ranked in the region and two contests remaining against the top 10.
Augusta holds a 4-2 mark with two games left against regionally ranked teams while Francis Marion is 3-4 with one game remaining.
The teams below C-N are North Georgia and Georgia College. The Nighthawks are 2-7 against the top 10 with one game left while the Bobcats are 1-6 with two games left.
