Trojans rally for two over Carson-Newman

ANDERSON, S.C. – Carson-Newman (26-14, 8-6 South Atlantic Conference) left 20 runners stranded throughout a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Anderson (32-9, 9-4 SAC) 5-3 and 7-6.

Anderson scored seven unanswered over the final two innings of the series to complete a comeback win in game two on a walk off home run from Abby Child. Brittany Hefner (Talbot, Tenn.) conked her 18th home run of the year and her 71st RBI – one away from tying the school and SAC single season set by the Eagles' Staci Fish in 2001.

Game one: Anderson 5, Carson-Newman 3

The Eagles got game one started off right with a Jessica Morgan (Ooltewah, Tenn.) triple and an Elayna Siebert (Knoxville, Tenn.) double brought a run in in the first for the Eagles.

However, Anderson used a two-run homerun from Bailey Smith in the second to take a lead it wouldn't surrender.

The Eagles would bring a solo run across in the fifth and seventh innings, but the Trojans brought two across in the sixth to seal the game.

Carson-Newman left the bases loaded in the fourth and stranded two in the seventh.

Kaitie Sims (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.) took the loss to fall to 16-3.

Carson-Newman outhit the Trojans 10-8 and made fewer errors than AU 2-0.

Smith picked up the win (15-5) for the Trojans firing a complete game with five strikeouts.

Game two: Anderson 7, Carson-Newman 6

Cassie Lyons (Knoxville, Tenn.) carried a no-hitter through 5.1 innings for the Eagles before Anderson's bats came to life.

The Eagles looked to be in cruise control with a four-run opening inning after RBI singles from Sara Kelley (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and Caitlyn Lance (East Ridge, Tenn.).

That was followed by solo runs in the second and sixth innings.

However, that's when Anderson made its rally.

The Trojans brought three across in the sixth to halve the Eagles lead.

AU started the seventh with a Sieber double and a Neidigh single to center.  Swygert singled up the gut to bring Sieber in and put the tying run on.  With no one out, Child went yard to left center to end the game with a three-run home run.

Lyons took the loss to fall to (10-11).  Bell was credited with the win for the Trojans; she improved to 17-5.

The Eagles stay on the road for a doubleheader Thursday at league-leading Mars Hill.
