HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Carson-Newman (30-16) and Coker (24-16) battled to a pair of shutouts Sunday afternoon. The Eagles dropped game one 1-0 before forcing the Cobras to lay a goose egg in game two with a 3-0 win.
Game one: Coker 1, Carson-Newman 0
Carson-Newman advanced four runners to second base or beyond, but couldn't bring any of the team around for a run in a 1-0 decision with Coker.
The Cobras set the final score in the third when Jaclin Poole lofted a fly ball to deep center field to give Bryant McLendon enough time to tag up and score.
Sara Kelley (Ooltewah, Tenn.) led Carson-Newman at the plate, going two-for-two with a double. However, outside of C-N's four, five and six batters, the Eagles were hitless. Brittany Hefner (Talbot, Tenn.) and Caitlyn Lance (East Ridge, Tenn.) both collected a solitary base knock.
Kaitie Sims (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.) was shackled with the loss to fall to 18-5 for the season.
Game two: Carson-Newman 3, Coker 0
Carson-Newman brought its bats to life to start game two. Elayna Siebert (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Bri Shoemake (Ooltewah, Tenn.) broke out back-to-back to doubles for one run. After an out, Kelley yanked another double into center to push C-N ahead 2-0 in the top of the first.
The Eagles would add a run in the fourth after Cassie Elliot (Johnson City, Tenn.) singled through the right side to bring Kelley around from second.
C-N would withstand a late rally from the Cobras in the seventh. Sweat and Younger both hit singles up the middle to leadoff the inning. C-N starting pitcher Cassie Lyons (Knoxville, Tenn.) struck out the next two batters before Rountree singled to left to load the bases.
However, Lyons dusted off McLendon looking after a nine-pitch at bat for her fifth strikeout to win the game and leave the bases loaded.
Lyons improved to 12-11 for the year after tossing the complete game.
The Eagles are back in action at the South Atlantic Conference tournament.
