Former Eagle Cishek sets Florida Marlins record for scoreless innings pitched to begin career

MIAMI — Former Carson-Newman pitcher Steve Cishek is making the most of his time with the Florida Marlins.

Cishek, who was called up by the Marlins on May 24 from Class AAA New Orleans, gave up one hit in one scoreless inning of work on Friday to earn his first major league save and set the franchise record by beginning his career with 12 2/3 scoreless innings pitched. Cishek surpassed the mark of former Marlin Matt Turner, who began his career with 11 2/3 scoreless innings of work in 1993.

The 24-year-old Cishek has appeared in nine games for Florida during two stints with the franchise, allowing six hits and striking out seven batters with just two walks.

Prior to joining the Marlins, Cishek made 15 appearances for New Orleans this season. He had a 1-1 record with a 2.35 earned run average, striking out 19 and walking 12 in 23 innings of work.

Cishek, who was drafted out of Carson-Newman in the fifth round by the Marlins in the 2007 draft, became the first Eagle to reach the majors since Clyde Wright when he was called up by Florida last September. Wright played 10 seasons in the majors with three teams — the California Angels, Milwaukee Brewers and Texas Rangers —from 1966-75.
