Former Eagle Cishek earns first career major league victory

ARLINGTON — Former Carson-Newman baseball standout Steve Cishek added another first to his list of achievements in the major leagues on Saturday night to help lead the Florida Marlins to a 9-5 victory over the Texas Rangers.

Cishek worked the final 2 2/3 innings to earn his first career big league victory. The 25-year-old right-hander surrendered two earned runs and two hits and fanned four in his 13th appearance for the Marlins this season.

Cichek's win comes less than a month after he notched his first career save in a victory over Arizona on June 10.

On the year, Cishek is 1-1 with a 2.25 earned run average. He has 20 strikeouts to just four walks in 20 innings of work.

Cishek, who was drafted out of Carson-Newman in the fifth round by the Marlins in the 2007 draft, became the first Eagle to reach the majors since Clyde Wright when he was called up by Florida last September.

Cishek and the Marlins are back in action tonight at Texas before returning home for a seven-game stretch prior to the All-Star break.
