Orange and Blue World Series commences Friday

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman baseball team wraps up its fall season with a best-of-five intrasquad World Series coached by assistant coaches Daniel Sharp (Blue) and Tripp Faulk (Orange).

Games one will begin at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon with game two slated for a 4 p.m. start time Saturday. Sunday will be a 2 p.m. first pitch leading into an off day Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday's start times will be determined over the weekend with a location to be announced.

Games one, three and five will employ American League rules with designated hitters while games two and four will allow the pitchers to hit in National League rules.

The No. 1 pick in the draft was second-team All-South Atlantic Conference selection and ABCA and NCBWA All-Southeast Region pick pitcher Vince Apicella (Dillsburg, Pa.) by Faulk.

Apicella will start game one Friday afternoon as the blue side has yet to announce who will get the ball from Sharp.

The two sides drafted pitchers before moving onto the outfield position where the blue side took redshirt freshman Brendan Campbell (Yardley, Penn.) and the top infielder Ian Pung (Knoxville, Tenn.). Faulk countered with junior catcher Greg Jones (Maryville, Tenn.) as the top catcher selection in the draft.

The Orange team captured the title in four games a season ago. Catcher J.D. Cowart and shortstop Bryan Everhart were named the MVPs for the series.

The winner of the series earns a championship shirt while the losing team has to do field work and paint the facilities.

The team that scores the most total runs over the course of the five contests gets a meal at Gondolier.

An audio broadcast will be available for games one and three by visiting cneagles.com/live with the possibility of other games being broadcast depending on scheduling and other events around Mossy Creek.
