Eagles Earn 1-1 Draw with Tusculum

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles (4-3-1, 2-1-1 SAC) men's soccer team fought to a 1-1 draw with the Tusculum Pioneers (4-3-2, 1-2-1 SAC) in front of a capacity crowd at McCown Field on Wednesday night.

Both goals in the match came in the second period, with freshman forward Ryan Odum (Hendersonville, Tenn.) scoring Carson-Newman's lone goal in the 52nd minute mark.

"Maybe the result is a fair result," said Carson-Newman head coach Richard Moodie. "I don't think we deserved to win, I think we gave a great effort but this performance wasn't where it should have been and could have been. But the effort is first class, the boys worked every bit of every minute and didn't give us on us and the crowd."

The two teams played to a scoreless first period, with Carson-Newman outshooting Tusculum 8-4 in the first 45 minutes.

Odum's goal came seven minutes into the second period, knocking in a kick five feet away from the Tusculum goalkeeper Andy Goellner to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute mark. The goal is the first in Odum's collegiate career.

"Great to see a freshman coming off the bench and onto the field making that happen for us," said Moodie.

Nearly five mintues later, Carson-Newman had an opportunity to take a two-goal advantage, as midfielder Sindre Welo made a shot on goal that would hit the right post to keep the game at a 1-0 Eagle lead.

Carson-Newman kept its 1-0 lead for nearly the next 18 minutes until the 70th minute mark. Tusculum evened the score as Fredrik Muren scored on a shot from ten yards out just over the head of C-N goalkeeper Rumwald Le Guevel (Vannes, France) to tie the match.

Neither team scored in the final twenty minutes, setting up the first overtime periods this season for the Eagles. In the first overtime, both teams made a shot but did not score. In the second overtime period of 10 minutes, Carson-Newman made six shots while Tusculum made two, but neither team capitalized with a goal, ending the match in a 1-1 draw.

The Eagles outshot the Pioneers 22-14 throughout the match. Le Guevel picked up two saves on the night with his one goal allowed, while the Tusculum goalkeeper Goellner made four saves, only allowing one goal.

"The game could've gone either way and again I thought the result was a fair result," Moodie said.

Carson-Newman will next play on Saturday Sept. 29 against Young Harris at home on McCown Field at 3 p.m. An audio webcast of the match will be available on www.cneagles.com.
