Eagles Host Tenth-Ranked Young Harris Saturday

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles (4-3-1, 2-1-1 South Atlantic Conference) men's soccer team will host the 10th-ranked Young Harris Mountain Lions (7-1, 2-1 Peach Belt Conference) at McCown Field on Saturday Sept. 29 at 3 p.m.

Carson-Newman is coming off of a 1-1 draw against rival Tusculum on Wednesday at McCown Field. Young Harris is ranked 10th in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II National Top 25 poll, and held the no. 6 ranking two weeks ago.

"This is an opportunity for us to get recognized nationally perhaps," said Carson-Newman head coach Richard Moodie. "It's also an opportunity for some guys to get some playing time because we want to try and maybe mix it up a little bit. We're going out to win as always and we've got to defend McCown Field. We haven't lost at home and we don't plan on doing so."

In Carson-Newman's 1-1 tie against Tusculum, the lone goal was scored by freshman forward Ryan Odum (Hendersonville, Tenn.) and Coach Moodie said he is pleased with Odum's development in his first collegiate season.

"He's a great player, he has a great future here," said Moodie. "He's scoring goals in practice and probably looking like he's going to start against Young Harris on Saturday."

The Mountain Lions fell in their last match to no. 17 Mars Hill on Wednesday night by a 3-1 score. Junior midfielder Naill McCabe leads Young Harris with seven goals and nine assists this season, good for 23 points through the first nine matches.

"We played them this time last year and they actually beat us 5-0," said Moodie on the 2011 contest between Carson-Newman and Young Harris. "We look back at that game and that game could've easily been 5-5. We had a lot of chances in the first half and didn't take them. Their first chance was in the back of the net and everything else after. They are very deadly coming forward offensively, and pretty disciplined and experienced as well."

The men's match at 3 p.m. will follow a women's soccer match between Carson-Newman and Limestone at noon at McCown Field.

An audio webcast of the match will be available on www.cneagles.com.
