Anderson holds off C-N

VIDEO: Stephen Lyons Interview

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – A game that finished 46 days later than its originally start date ended with the same result from when it was postponed, Anderson (6-4-3, 4-2-3) 1 and Carson-Newman (4-5-5, 2-4-3) 0.

"I thought initially we handled the restart quite well," Carson-Newman head coach Stephen Lyons said. "Overall, I thought we played some good futbol. Created some good chances and worked the keeper. Probably could've been a bit more clinical. Too many individuals for us tonight, we need to be a team."

The loss is Carson-Newman's first home loss, ending an unbeaten streak of five games at home to start the year.

C-N got the first shot of the match from Ben Dukes (Southampton, England) but it was blocked. The Eagles had two more really good opportunities in the 24th and 27th minutes as Harry Whitehead (Oxford, England) and Mitchell Honcoop (Nieuw-Vennep, Netherlands) each had chances at goal but Anderson keeper Amos Uber made a pair of saves.

The Trojans only shot on frame went in the back of the net, as Lucas Goldberg found Juan Jose Alvarez to give the visitors the advantage in the 32nd minute.

The game officially resumed with Anderson taking a corner kick that was headed away by Whitehead. The Eagles managed one shot and one corner in the final 12:55 of the opening half, neither of which resulted in the equalizer.

After the restart, the Trojans only had one shot with Carson-Newman maintaining majority of possession and creating all the chances. Three minutes into the second half, Whitehead sent a shot toward Uber who made the easy save.

Anderson's defense clogged things up all half on C-N, blocking four of C-N's next five shot attempts. Carson-Newman attempted shots from long range in the 78th minute and 80th minutes from Whitehead and Jonas Friedl (Feldbach, Styria) but both went wide right.

Carson-Newman stayed relentless on the attack, Tim Haans (Tilburg, Netherlands) and Nic Carsh (Newberg, Ore.) both had shot attempts from the edge of the box blocked in the 85th and 86th minutes. Maybe C-N's best chance to strike off a corner kick in the 87th minute. De Graauw's corner was booted into the box and knocked around and eventually ended up in the direction of Maxime Wester who was inside the six-yard box but headed the ball over top the net and out of play. Moments later, De Graauw took C-N's final shot that was covered by Uber for his fourth and final save.

C-N outshot AU 18-5 and 13-0 in the second half. The Eagles also had a 6-1 on corner kicks but were unable to score an equalizer. Eight different Eagles attempted a shot in the match.

The Eagles are back on the field on Saturday when they host #19 Limestone at 7:30 p.m.
