Carson-Newman Men's Soccer Position Preview: Forwards

Harry Baggaley interview

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- We begin previewing the Carson-Newman men's soccer team by taking a look at the forward position.

The Eagles have the tall task of replacing reigning SAC offensive player of the year Thaylan Silva. There are plenty of pieces still in place to fill the loss. Harry Whitehead and Nic Carsh return for their senior seasons. The preseason all-SAC first team selection was second on the team with six goals scored and added three assists.

Carsh was also recognized by the league this preseason, being named to the all-SAC second team. He contributed two goals and four assists. Both forwards will be asked to take on an increased role.

Also returning for a senior season is Quinten Carels. The forward competed in 16 games, making two starts in 2021.

The Eagles added two graduate transfers to the forward position group, Harry Baggaley and Gustavo Moses Bessa. Baggaley spent the past four years at Tennessee Wesleyan where he holds the record for most goals scored in a season.

"I feel like I could've done a lot better," Baggaley said. "So the things I wish I could've done there I can hopefully do here, but it's a step up, so it's time to see if I can adjust to the new level and hopefully help the team in any way I can."

Bessa comes to the Eagles, after having played at the University of Northwestern Ohio. During his time there, he was a two-time all WHAC caliber player.

Two other forwards that will vie for playing time include senior Willem Kruijk and freshman Weston Parker

Part two of the position previews will highlight the midfielders with senior Yannick Kranz scheduled to be released on Sunday. Carson-Newman opens up the season on Aug. 25 at home when it takes on West Alabama.
