Eagles rally in doubles to shutout Cedarville, 9-0

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman shutout visiting Cedarville (Ohio), 9-0, on Saturday afternoon at the C-N Tennis Complex.

The No. 3 doubles team of freshmen Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) and Eric Mueller (Collierville, Tenn.) started the Eagles off with an 8-6 win. 

Then C-N staged two huge comeback wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.  At No. 1, junior Paul Birdsong ( Woodstock, Ga.) and freshman Warren McClure (Marietta, Ga.) rallied from a 7-2 deficit to win their doubles match, while the No. 2 doubles team of senior Dusty Davis (Morristown, Tenn.) and junior Derek Holdway (Woodstock, Ga.) overcame a service break to take their match to a tiebreak before securing the victory. 

The Eagles cruised in singles winning every set in all six matches. 

At No. 6 singles, freshman Garret Duron (Woodstock, Ga.) was first off the court with a 6-0, 6-0 win, and then Dusty Davis (Morristown, Tenn.) clinched the match for the Eagles with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. 

The Eagles are now 3-2 on the young season, and open South Atlantic Conference play against Brevard College on Wednesday in Jefferson City.
