Eagles conclude fall competition at Belmont Abbey tournament

BELMONT, N.C. – The Carson-Newman men's tennis team competed in the Belmont Abbey tournament on October 12thand 13thfor their last fall season match.

In round one, Lenoir Rhyne was the opponent and the top two doubles teams were comprised of Gabriel Dabdab (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Jesus Bacete-Sanz (Madrid, Spain) at number one and Marc Bantel (Urback, Germany) and Rintaro Oka at number two. Both were defeated 6-4 and 6-3 by LR's Hernandez and Lazenby at number one and Atkinson and Miranda at number two.

The singles for that round were Dabdab at number one, Bantel at number two and Joey Stiles (New Oxford, Penn.) at number three. The only one of the trio to come out on top was Dabdab defeating Miranda 6-3, 6-1. Bantel fell in a tight tiebreaker 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 and Stiles fell 6-3, 7-5.

In round two the Eagles faced Montevallo. At number one doubles was Bantel and Oka defeating Brecht and Milan 7-5. The number two duo was Stiles and Daniel Cox (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and they defeated Tanguy and Brad 7-6(4). 

Oka, Sanz and Cox headed up the top three singles against Dylan, James and Benni. The top two fell in hard fought tiebreaking fashion 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 at number one and 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 at number two. The third was defeated 6-2, 6-1.

Round three was against conference big dogs Wingate. Dabdab and Sanz were back at number one doubles and defeated Geva and Canyadell 7-6(7) while Bantel and Oka fell to sumer and Addison 6-1.

In singles the Eagles didn't fare as well as they lost all three. Dabdab was defeated at number one by Jones 6-4, 6-2, Bantel lost at number two 6-2, 6-0, and Stiles fell to Geva 6-2, 7-5.

In the fourth and final round the Eagles competed against Montevallo one last time. Dabdab and Sanz defeated Dani and Gavin 6-3 and Cox and Stiles fell to Sergi and Chandler 6-3.

One the singles side of competition, Oka fell to Georg 7-6(4), 6-2, Sanz defeated Alejandro 6-4, 6-3 and Cox prevailed against Alex 6-2, 6-4. 

The Eagles will take a break from action for the winter and start up the regular season on February 3rdagainst the Citadel at home.
