Four Lady Eagles Selected to Preseason All-SAC Teams

ROCK HILL, S.C. — The Carson-Newman women's soccer team has four players represented on the 2010 preseason All-South Atlantic Conference teams, league officials announced Thursday.

Junior forward Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.), senior midfielder Morgan Gruenenfelder (Sweetwater, Tenn.), sophomore midfielder Andrea Saevik (Bolandet, Norway) and senior defender Melissa Morris (Sweetwater, Tenn.) are all first team selections.

Howell, a 2009 first team All-SAC performer, was second in the conference in goals (13), assists (nine) and points (35). She led the league in match-winning goals with seven. Howell was also a first team Daktronics All-Southeast Region selection and a second team NSCAA All-Southeast Region honoree.

Gruenenfelder received second team All-SAC honors last season after producing five goals and four assists for the Lady Eagles. She also garnered third team NSCAA All-America honors and first team NSCAA All-Southeast Region accolades.

Saevik, who started 22 matches for C-N last season, tallied four goals and dished out eight assists to earn second team Daktronics All-Southeast Region and first team All-SAC honors.

Morris earned first team All-SAC honors in 2009 as she anchored a C-N defense that produced 12 shutouts. She also contributed four goals, including three match-winners, and four assists. Her match-winning goal in the final second of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional final against Columbus State propelled the Lady Eagles into the Elite Eight. Morris also received first team Daktronics All-Southeast Region honors.

C-N finished the 2009 season ranked fifth in the nation after reaching the Elite Eight for the third time in school history and first time since 2005. The team posted a 20-3-1 overall record and won the South Atlantic Conference regular season title for the fifth time in seven years and also won the SAC Tournament title.
