Resilient Eagles defeat Wolves, extend unbeaten streak

VIDEO: Simon Duffy Interview

NEWBERRY, S.C. –  After starting the month with a shaky start, Carson-Newman (4-3-2, 3-2-1) ended the month on a strong note with a 2-1 victory over Newberry Saturday evening in Newberry, South Carolina.

"Just a bit of resiliency today," Carson-Newman head coach Simon Duffy said. "Coming away from the Mars Hill game, it was a draw, but it felt like a loss because we had created so much and dominated the game and we're very good in transition. Just great to be able to bounce back with another game on the road. But thank God, October is coming up because it is home home home for us. Really looking forward to that. Delighted with the resiliency today and glad to get the win."

After starting the month of September 0-3-1, the Eagles flipped the script and ended the month of 3-0-1.

The win over the Wolves is C-N's ninth straight in the series. It is the fourth straight one goal win for the Eagles over Newberry as well.

Off C-N's second corner kick in the opening minutes, Felicia Frick flipped a ball into the box that was controlled by Annika Fend who right footed a shot into the bottom left corner of goal to put the Eagles ahead 1-0 in the 8th minute. It was Fend's first career goal, on her second career shot.

The Eagles are now 3-0 when scoring the game's first goal and 43-3-5 under Duffy.

Selina Jud (Wilderswil, Switzerland) had a pair of great chances to extend C-N's first half advantage. Just 90 seconds apart, the sophomore delivered two low shots that forced diving saves from Aubrey Cripe.

Newberry got its first chance in the 35th minute. Jaidyn Jacobs fired a low shot that was saved by Berna Kabakci (Zeddam, Netherlands)

C-N outshot Newberry 7-3 and 4-2 on goal in the first half. The Eagles managed five corners in the opening half of play.

Kabakci was tested right out of the gates to begin the second half. Alexa Randall had her shot toward goal saved by the freshman. The two teams went more than 25 minutes without a shot on target. The next shot on frame came from Anita Arnadottir whose header forced a Cripe save.

In the 74th minute, off another corner kick, Molly Zander (Baneberry, Tenn.) booted a shot into the back of the net to extend the C-N lead to two. Zander's goal was the first of her career as well.

Newberry quickly responded; Ella McDevitt found Jysabella Tolentino in the 76th minute to bring the Wolves within a goal.

The Wolves only managed one more shot in the final 13 minutes, as C-N held on for the 2-1 road victory.

The Eagles have allowed just two goals in the last 396:81 of game time. Kabakci records her first win of the season, recording two saves in the win.

Carson-Newman outshot Newberry 15-8 and 7-3 on goal. The Eagles did not allow the Wolves to attempt a corner kick in the match. The Eagles have outshot their opponent in all but one match this season.

The Eagles are without a mid-week match this week, but host Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. The match can be viewed on FloSports with a subscription. As always, fans can follow along @CN_eagles on Twitter and Instagram for live updates throughout the game.
