Lady Eagles Defeat Queens, 3-1, for First Victory of 2010

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Freshman forward Bianca Hall (Newcastle, England) tallied a pair of goals to lead the fifth-ranked Carson-Newman women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Queens (N.C.) on Sunday in the Queens Soccer Classic.

With the win, the Lady Eagles improve to 1-1 on the season. Queens falls to 0-2.

Queens' Brooke Foil broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 27th minute to give the Royals a 1-nil lead at halftime.

Hall put the Lady Eagles on the board coming out of the locker room as she lofted a shot over Queens goalkeeper Michelle Landry in the 47th minute to knot the game at one apiece. Junior Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) was credited with the assist.

C-N senior Morgan Gruenenfelder (Sweetwater, Tenn.) scored an unassisted goal in the 74th minute that proved to be the game winner.

Hall later finished off another pass from Howell in the 86th minute to give the Lady Eagles an insurance goal.

C-N dominated possession by outshooting Queens 24-6, including 10 shots on goal.

Sophomore Sarah Tompkins (Franklin, Wis.) was solid in goal for the Lady Eagles as she finished with two saves to get the win.

Landry collected six saves in the loss.

The Lady Eagles return to the pitch next Sunday as they host Belmont Abbey for their home opener. Match time is set for 3 p.m. at McCown Field.
