Lady Eagles fall to North Georgia Saints 8-2

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman women's soccer team (2-3) fell in its first home match of the 2012 season losing 8-2 to the 11th-ranked North Georgia Saints (6-0) at McCown Field Wednesday night.

North Georgia jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first 45 minutes.  Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) provided the lone first half score for Carson-Newman in the 19th minute, scoring her second goal of the season.

Carson-Newman head coach Richard Moodie said North Georgia lived up to its billing as a nationally ranked opponent.

"They're 11th in the country for a reason," Moodie said. "We found a way to get the ball in the back of the net and I'm thinking game on, but goal number two came shortly and it just seemed like the floodgates opened. "

Just three minutes after Gregg's goal, the Saints' Sophia Matonak skipped the ball over Kendra Ivins' hand to break the tie and break things open in the 22nd minute.

After the first goal, the Saints took off offensively.  From Matonak's goal until the end of the first half, North Georgia outshot the Eagles 11-2.

In the second period with the score 6-1, Carson-Newman's Danna Stringle (Ontario, Canada) flicked the ball to Bianca Hall (Newcastle, England), who scored from the left side of the goal.  Hall played the ball into the left side of the net outside the reach of goalkeeper Mallory Sayre to make the score 6-2 in the 51st minute.

"The second goal was a piece of class, when the ball came into Bianca (Hall) and one touch through Danna (Stringle), showing they work well together," Moodie said.

North Georgia found the back of the net two more times in the second half. Kendra Ivins picked up her first loss in goal for the first time in two games. The Saints' first first half goal ended a string of 170-consecutive shutout minutes. Ivins falls to 2-3 on the season.

"Ivins had a great performance (Wednesday) and she was bombarded with shots," Moodie said. "Kendra is learning and there are still areas of her game that she can improve, but that is our job to get her there."

The Lady Eagles will play again on the road Saturday, Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. at Newberry College.
