Five swimmers named CSCAA Scholar All-America

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Five Carson-Newman women's swimmers have been named CSCAA Scholar All-America.

Elly Culp, Maggie Melhorn, Lisa Postma, Nancy Claire Smith and Margaret Stansberry all make the cut for Carson-Newman.

The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) selected a record 853 swimmers and divers for its Scholar All-America team. The selections recognize students that have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

Culp was a three-time Honorable Mention All-American as a freshman, and her best finish at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships came with a 12th-place finish in the 200 Free Relay. She won six races during her freshman campaign with two individual wins in the 100 Fly against Bellarmine and King and Emory & Henry.

Smith is Carson-Newman swimming's first ever Academic All-American. Additionally, she won the NCAA's Elite 90 award. Smith was an All-American in the 800 Free Relay and earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 200 Free Relay.

She won Carson-Newman's first-ever Elite 90 Award at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships for having the highest GPA at the championship site.

Smith reset the school record as a member of the 800 Free Relay with a time of 7:25.29.

The Franklin, Tenn.-native won three events during her junior season, the 200 Breast against the University of the Cumberlands, as well as the 400 Free and 400 Free Relay against King and Emory & Henry.

Melhorn earned All-American and Honorable Mention All-American, she won her first All-American plaudit as a member of the 800 Free Relay. She took home Honorable Mention All-American awards in the 100 Breast and as a member of the 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay.

Postma won 10 events during her debut season with three wins coming against the University of the Cumberlands and four wins in the 50 Free.

Stansberry became Carson-Newman's first-ever three-time All-American honors during one NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in the 100 and 200 Free and the 800 Free Relay.
