C-N Swim heads home from UT for Senior Day against Mars Hill University

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.- Eagles head home for senior day against Mars Hill after a dual meet with the University of Tennessee.

Carson-Newman swim is headed home after a dual meet against Division I University of Tennessee earlier this afternoon. The Eagles' combined team score was 100.5 compared to Tennessee's 476.5.

"The team understood the task at hand and put together several solid swims. While times mean a lot in the world of swimming, we were more so trying to focus on finishing certain parts of the race or focusing on getting out faster in earlier parts of the race," head coach for the swim team Ben Young said.

On the women's side of competition, Linda Ungerboeck finished fifth in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:34.18. Kennadi King (1:55.41) and Lillian Holt (1:58.85) finished fourth and fifth in the women's 200-yard freestyle, and Rachel Peden finished third in the 400-yard IM in 4:36.21.

Kyla Blakemore placed second in the 100-yard backstroke in 56.72. Blakemore also placed fourth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:02.32. Breanna Belcher finished the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.48, affording herself a third-place spot in the event. Belcher found the podium again as she placed third in the women's 200-yard breaststroke.

In the women's 200-yard butterfly, Maria Tirulli placed second with a final time of 2:08.90. Lily Parr snagged a top-five finish in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.00 seconds flat. Manon Compagner swam the 100-yard freestyle in 52.10 and tied for fourth in the women's 100-yard freestyle.

"A lot of our athletes were close to where they were at mid-season which was good to see. In the end, our performance lets us know where we are, and tomorrow will tell us even more," Young said.

On the men's side of competition, Alonso Castro placed fourth in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:24.91. Tyler Schehr stood on the podium in the 100-yard backstroke for his third-place finish in 50.79. Schehr also placed fifth in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:54.20.

Henrique Januario snagged a fourth-place finish in the men's 100-yard breaststroke with at time of 56.26. Januario then raced in the 200-yard breaststroke for a third-place finish in 2:03.49, and he found the podium again for his third-place finish in the 400-yard IM in 4:00.51.

In the men's 200-yard butterfly, Guilherme Martins finished fourth with a time of 1:50.89. Hobson Stelling tied for third in the 50-yard freestyle in 20.59, and Arthur Gluzman placed fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.31. Will Humphreys made his mark by placing fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 50.08.

"How we respond to back-to-back days of racing, especially after coming off the training we have been doing, will be important. It will be a good test to see where we are mentally and physically. Regardless, Senior Day is tomorrow, and we are pumped to send these seniors off on a high note," Young said.

The Eagles are back in the Maddox Pool tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 20, to race Mars Hill and celebrate the Carson-Newman swim graduating class. The Senior Day festivities will begin at 5:55 p.m., and the meet against Mars Hill will follow immediately after at 6:00 p.m. Stay up to date on cneagles.com.
