Eagles wrap-up fall competition at Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. – The Carson-Newman women's tennis team competed in the Belmont Abbey tournament on October 12th and 13th for their last fall season match.

In round one, Lenoir Rhyne was the opponent and the top two doubles teams were comprised of Abby Reis (Des Moines, IA) and Hannah Price (Knoxville, Tenn.) at number one and Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) and Klara Vuckovic (Germany) at number two. Both handily defeated their opponents with the ones winning 6-1 against LR's Sanne and Emily. The twos defeated Spencer and Sophia 6-2.

The singles for that round were Reis at number one, Liashova at number two and Shelby Rodgers (Knoxville, Tenn.) at number three. The only one of the trio to come out on top was Liashova defeating Ally for LR in tiebreaking fashion 6-2, 4-6, 10-8. Reis and Rogers were defeated by Marta and Taylor 6-4, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-1.

In round two the Eagles faced Belmont Abbey College. At number one doubles was Liashova and Vuckovic defeating McNamara and Dorn 6-3. The number two duo was Rodgers and Claire Smith (Lexington, K.Y.) and they defeated Heim and Nguyen 6-3 as well. 

Price, Vuckovic and Smith headed up the top three singles against Nguyen, Boatright and DeFrench. Price won 6-3, 6-1, Vuckovic was defeated in a tiebreaker 6-7, 6-2, 10-6 and Smith came out on top 6-3, 7-5.

Round three was against conference big dogs Wingate. Reis and Price were back at number one doubles and defeated Homan and Hsu 6-3 while Liashova and Vuckovic defeated Marks and Cecceroni 6-4. 

In singles the Eagles didn't fare as well as they lost all three. Reis was defeated at number one by Rudenko 6-0, 6-3, Liashova lost at number two 6-4, 6-1, and Smith fell to Cecceroni 6-1, 6-1.

In the fourth and final round the Eagles competed against North Carolina Wesleyan. Reis and Price fell to Abdoulleva and Rowan 6-3 and Smith and Rodgers defeated Halabi and Johnson at number one and two doubles. 

Once again the Eagles struggled in singles and did not come out with a win in that area. Price fell to Abdoulleva 6-1, 6-3, Vuckovic was defeated by Johnson 6-3, 6-1 and Rodgers did not make the cut against Barbera 6-3, 6-2.

The Eagles will take a break from action for the winter and start up the regular season on February 1st at Austin Peay.
