GREENWOOD, Ind. - Carson-Newman's athletic communications team tallied 12 national awards at the College Sports Information Directors of America's (CoSIDA) Publications and Digital Design Contest, finishing with the third most accolades in the country among all schools in all NCAA divisions.
West Virginia University led the country with 21 honors while Washburn University followed with 18. Carson-Newman finished with the third most in the country with its 12.
Included in the department's haul are four best in the nation awards (also third most in the nation in all divisions). Director of Athletic Communications Adam Cavalier grabbed two such awards for the football program's season schedule poster and the department's year in review magazine. Associate Director of Athletic Communications Danielle Whaley also snatched a pair winning for her men's soccer media guide and men's soccer game notes.
"I cannot say enough about what Danielle, Michael as well as Richard Martin and Brian White pulled off doing all 21 of our sports simultaneously in the spring," Cavalier said. "For the quality of their work not to suffer through that speaks volumes about their capabilities as professionals. These results re-affirm what I have known for a long, long time - Danielle and Michael are the best in the country at what they do. They set the pace for this field. It's a joy to watch their continued growth and development in everything they do here at Carson-Newman. I've always wanted to surround myself with 10s, and it's truly a blessing to get to be around a couple of 20s every day."
Cavalier and Whaley each were recognized five times, while Assistant Director of Athletic Communications Michael Wottreng picked up two awards.
In addition to Whaley's two best in the nation honors for her men's soccer media guide and men's soccer game notes, she also won for best cover for a men's soccer media guide. The University of Tennesee alumna rounded out her honors with a third-place finish in college posters for her men's soccer schedule poster and game in fifth for motion graphics/gifs for her Football National Signing Day gif. Whaley brings her career CoSIDA awards tally to 11.

He has eight design awards to go along with two Fred Stabley writing awards from the organization.
Wottreng brought his career publications and digital design awards total to 12 with his continued prolificness in the game notes categories. The Marquette grad finished second in fall game notes with his volleyball notes package while also grabbing second for his women's basketball media guide.
These accolades bring the department's overall national awards total to 35 from CoSIDA in the last five years. The 12 honors are the most in a single year by the athletic communications office.
