BOONE, N.C. – The Carson-Newman track and field team completed its first event of the 2014-15 season as the Eagles competed in the Appalachian Indoor Open hosted by Appalachian State.
Seven of the nine teams involved were Division-I teams opponents as the Eagles and Lees-McRae were the only two Division-II teams.
Freshman Tanner Stepp (Jefferson City, Tenn.) won the men's high jump with a jump of 2.11 meters, which was high enough for a provisional NCAA Championship spot. That jump set a new school record.
"I am very pleased with the results of this early meet. We had a number of returning athletes who showed great improvement," coach David Needs said. "Also, we had many new athletes that have showed why there is so much promise. Tanner Stepp's performance today already provisionally qualified for Nationals and jumped a personal school best 6'11.
For the women, freshman Samantha Gudger was the highest-placing athlete. She placed second in the high jump with a jump of 1.62m.
The women's 4x400m Relay team placed second with a time of 4:19.18.
Along with Stepp, junior Darius Childs paced the Eagles with a time of 7.80 in the 55m Hurdles.
The men's 4x400m Relay team placed seventh with a 3:46.67 time.
The Eagles next take to the track on January 16th and 17th, 2015 in Johnson City, Tenn. at the East Tennessee Classic.
