AUSTIN, Texas – Carson-Newman track and field's Randall Freeman (Ooltewah, Tenn.) has garnered first team Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, the organization announced Wednesday afternoon.
Freeman is Carson-Newman's first ever two-sport academic All-American. He also garnered second team academic All-America honors for football after running the ball 63 times for 343 yards this season. He averaged 44.7 yards per game and scored a touchdown on senior day against Wingate.
Freeman joins Clayton Holmes (football 1990-91 and track 1991), Carl Torbush (football 1973, baseball 1973-74), Tom Jones (football 1968-69 and baseball 1969-70) and Roy Hill (basketball 1965 and baseball 1965) as Carson-Newman's overall two-sport All-Americans.
Freeman is a graphic design major who graduates from C-N with a 3.88 GPA.
"Randall is a gifted athlete who can not only dedicate himself to two sports and achieve greatness; but can also dedicate himself to the highest levels in the classroom and succeed greatly there, too," head track coach David Needs said. "Randall is the type of person who decides he wants to do something and will work non-stop until he gets there. His desire in the last three weeks of the track season was to be a top triple jumper in our league and in the region.
"His personal best mark improved by over 18 inches in that time and he did exactly what he set out to be. He was one of the best in the SAC and the Southeast Region. Couple that with the fact that he was already one of the best in several other events shows you the special person Randall Freeman is."
On the field of competition, Freeman earned SAC Field Athlete of the Year honors and was the conference champion in the shot (14.58 meters) and the javelin (51.91 meters).
He garnered All-region honors in the shot, triple jump, javelin and discus. Freeman was one of 14 athletes in the nation to earn all-region honors in four disciplines.
