Eagles’ Good Named Candidate for Harlon Hill Trophy

National Release

FLORENCE, Ala. – Carson-Newman senior quarterback Alex Good (Greensboro, N.C.) has been named as one of the 24 candidates for the 2009 Harlon Hill Trophy, which is awarded to Division II’s national Player of the Year.

Good one was of the six candidates selected from Super Regional Two. There are six candidates from each of D-II’s Super Regions.

The senior has led the Eagles to an 8-2 mark, which includes a perfect 6-0 mark in South Atlantic Conference play heading into Saturday’s regular season finale against Tusculum. He has guided the Eagles to eight-straight wins, and the No. 2 spot in the regional rankings, with one game left on the schedule.

Good’s and the Eagles’ veer-option offense is peaking as the regular season winds down.
C-N leads the nation in rushing offense at 322 yards per game, including 89.2 per game from Good. The Eagles are also averaging 458 yards per game in total offense, which ranks 10th nationally, after an 0-2 start.

The Greensboro, N.C. native has the Eagles averaging 43 points per game in SAC play, and rushing for 344.7 yards per game. His team has rushed for 500 and 496 yards in the last two games, convincing wins over Brevard and Wingate, respectively.

For the year, Good has run for 892 yards and eight touchdowns. He is averaging 5.6 yards per carry. He has also thrown for 1,320 yards and 14 TDs with only five interceptions.

The four-year starter earned South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week honors in September, running for 203 yards on 25 carries with a TD. He also rushed for 179 yards on 21 carries and two TDs in C-N’s 41-31 win over Catawba. Good became the first Eagle in 10 seasons to carry 30 times in a game, when he rushed for 153 yards in C-N’s 31-14 loss at now-No. 1 North Alabama.

Good became Carson-Newman’s career leader in total offense, now approaching 7,000 yards for his career, with a 25-yard run in a 77-7 win against Brevard two weeks ago. He passed former-Eagle All-American and Harlon Hill Trophy national finalist Leonard Guyton.
Good is also C-N’s career leader in touchdown passes (43) and rushing yards by a quarterback (2,720), and is tied for rushing TDs by a quarterback with 34.

A two-time All-South Atlantic Conference selection, Good has led the Eagles to three-consecutive SAC titles, and likely a second-straight NCAA playoff appearance.

Fellow South Atlantic Conference standout and Mars Hill running back Jonas Randolph joins Good on the regional ballot, along with North Alabama quarterback Harrison Beck, Arkansas Tech quarterback Nick Graziano, Delta State linebacker Lardester Hicks-Green, and Albany State (Ga.) running back Demetrice Johnson.

Players are nominated and voted on by the sports information directors at the 148 NCAA Division II football-playing institutions. The 24 initial candidates will be placed on regional ballots and the top two players from each of the four NCAA regions will advance to the national ballot when regional voting concludes on November 13.

The winner of the 2009 award, which is presented by the National Harlon Hill Award Committee, will be announced at the 24th annual Harlon Hill Trophy Presentation Banquet on Friday, December 11 at the Florence Conference Center at 6:30 p.m.
