HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Heading onto the road for the fourth time this season, the Eagles were able to pick up their fourth straight win in a 4-0 victory over the Chargers of Alabama Huntsville on Tuesday night.
The victory extends Carson-Newman's unbeaten streak to six games, recording its fourth straight undefeated win. The Eagles have not allowed an opposition goal in 475 minutes of play. Their five consecutive games without allowing a goal matches the longest streak since 2006 when C-N allowed zero goals through five games. The program now has 141 shutout victories.
"The lads did great again," head coach Stephen Lyons said of his crew. "It's been things we work on that they are putting into action."
The scoring run started early as Tobias Solem Karlsen netted his fifth goal of the season after taking a rebound off of Chargers' goalkeeper Gabriel Chilas.
The rest of the first half quiet in terms of scoring, but the second half belonged to the Eagles (6-1-1, 3-0-1).
In the 73rd minute, the Tom Read set up for a corner kick that would end up being deflected into the goal to put C-N up 2-0 off of an own goal.
Within the final 10 minutes of play, the Eagles scored two big goals to seal the deal.
Read shot from five yards out to find the back of the net in the 81st minute with an assist from Dylan McCabe, also netting his fifth goal of the season. With nearly three and a half minutes left in the game, Greg Evans found Collin Hensel nearly five yards in front of Chilas to score his first goal in 2017 and the second of his career.
"Another full team effort, great attitude and work rate from back to front and thoroughly deserved the win, "Lyons analyzed. "It is nice when you can make changes without any drop in level and that is going to be huge through the season."
The Eagles outshot the Chargers 16-13, making this the sixth time they have gotten more shots off than opponents this season. C-N had seven on goal compared to just two from the Chargers (3-4-0, 2-0-0). Read led the team with six shots, three landing on goal. Will Sainsbury-Logan and Evan Harr each had a pair of shots.
Twan Verweij notched his fifth shutout of the season, giving him a 5-1-1 record. His two saves in the victory put him at 18 total.
UAH's leading shot taker was Jordan Wright with three shots in the match including a shot that was saved by Verweij in the 26th minute.
Chilas finished the day saving just three of the 16 shots he faced.
"Great to keep another clean sheet and now need to focus getting back to conference play on Saturday," Lyons mentioned.
The Eagles equalized the overall series at 4-4, currently holding a two game winning streak against Alabama Huntsville.
