England posts top ten finish as Eagles land in eighth

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elizabeth England (Oakland, Tenn.) collected the ninth top 10 finish of her career by tying for ninth while the Carson-Newman women's golf team finished in eighth on Tuesday at the Converse Spring Invite by FCU Founders at the Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C.

"Our team's energy was much better today," women's golf coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "Everyone was resilient and fought. I was really pleased with everybody. We're improving with each tournament."

England, who was in 10th after the first round on Monday at six-over, shot one stroke better on Tuesday, carding a five-over 77 to move up one spot on the leaderboard. This was England's second best finish of the season, only behind her title-winning performance at the King (Tenn.) Intercollegiate in September.

Another player who had an excellent week was Jessica Hart (Roanoke, Va.). The lone senior on coach Strudwick's team, she posted her best finish of the season, placing 17th. Hart's final round was two shots better than her first, as she entered the clubhouse after shooting a 78 to finish with a score of 14-over.

Taylor Hayes (Lake Ozark, Mo.) sliced three strokes off her Monday score to put up a 10-over 82, completing the event at 23-over. For the tournament, Hayes finished with her squad's third-best score, tying for 38th.

Also improving during the second round was Rachel Watts (Newport, Tenn.), who moved into C-N's fourth spot and tied for 49th overall. The freshman also ended the day with an 82, six shots better than day one, and scored a 26-over 170 overall.

Allie Fletcher (Cumming, Ga.) shot a 27-over 171 for the tournament to finish tied for 52nd and freshman Katie Medley (Cleveland, Tenn.), playing as an individual, tied for 69th following a 32-over 176.

This week marked the last competition in February for the Eagles. The next event on their calendar is the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate from March 19th – 21st.
