JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Brevard picked up a four-set win over Carson-Newman 25-19, 17-25, 25-22 and 25-19 Friday night in South Atlantic Conference action at Holt Fieldhouse earning its first-ever win over the Eagles in 21 chances.
"We kind of struggled in serve receive and siding out," Carson-Newman coach Dave Franklin said. "The second set we sided out better. We were able to get some kills but we weren't able to do it consistently enough so they were able to put runs together on us. We just came out on the wrong side of the scoreboard."
Carson-Newman (3-26, 2-19) sees its losing streak extend to 11 matches while Brevard (7-21, 5-15) snaps a four-match skid of its own.
The opening set saw just two ties and two lead changes. The score was 16-14 in favor of the visitors when Brevard surged for seven of the next eight points to go ahead 23-15. A service error by the Eagles gave the first set to the Tornados.
The second stanza saw five ties and three changes. The score was deadlocked at 10 when the Eagles won six of the next seven rallies. The closest Brevard got the rest of the way was four points at 18-14 as the home group rattled off five of the next six before a kill from freshman outside hitter Marnie Streeter (Goldvein, Va.) ended the set to tie the match at one.
The third set saw six ties as Carson-Newman battled back to equalize the score at 15 and 18 only to see Brevard push the lead to 23-19 and capture the stanza on a service error.
Brevard led wire-to-wire in the fourth set as the Eagles pulled within a single point at 17-16 before the Tornados won three straight points. Back-to-back kills by Hannah Elmore sealed the match.
Carson-Newman hit .194 with 80 digs, six blocks and six service aces compared to Brevard's .260 hitting percentage, 83 digs, eight aces and four rejections.
Senior libero Taylor Lowe (Franklin, Tenn.) moved over 2,000 career digs with a match-high 32 scoops on the night.
Streeter tied for the match lead with 14 kills to go along with six scoops.
Sophomore middle blocker Natalie Harris (Monroe, N.C.) did not make an attack error pounding out 11 kills on a .440 attack percentage to go along with a career-high four service aces.
Junior setter Anna Patton (Franklin, Tenn.) dialed up her 13th double-double of the season with 41 assists and 13 digs.
Stephanie Lambert led Brevard with 14 kills while hitting .379 as Callie Chappell chipped in 13 smashes on a .343 hitting clip. Erin Barr handed out 45 assists and 10 digs.
Carson-Newman closes out the 2016 season with a 2 p.m. match against Lenoir-Rhyne at Holt Fieldhouse. The game will be broadcast at cneagles.com/live as the Eagle Sports Network provides the sights and sounds.
