NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Sports Writers Association has recognized Emerson Ahsmuhs as the state's Volleyball Player of the Week. She also received a nod on September 16.
The California native has been phenomenal all season, but in the last few games, she's taken it up a notch. In the two games this past week, Ahsmuhs logged double-doubles in each game with 20 kills and 16 digs in the victory over Mars Hill and 19 kills and 20 digs in the win over Catawba.
The 20 kills against Mars Hill permanently etches her name in the record books, landing 2nd all-time in kills in a three-set match. The only Eagle to do better was Molly Locke's 21 kill performance against Newberry on October 2, 2015.
The two games also marked the fifth game in a row with Ahsmuhs notched 10 or more kills and 10 or more digs, giving her five double-doubles straight. This also counts for her 10th and 11th double-double of the season.
In her second season with the Eagles, the sophomore has racked up five games with 20+ digs and three games with 20+ kills. In total, Ahsmuhs is just six kills away from her 300th of the season and 13 away from 600 career kills. To reach the top 20 all-time for kills in a single season, Ahsmuhs would need to surpass 394 kills this year, a mark that is well within reach with a playoff run.
On top of that, Ahsmuhs totals 274 digs this year, good for 360 career. In her freshman season, Ahsmuhs has just 86 digs. She has become a six-rotation hitter in her second year in Mossy Creek.
Currently, Ahsmuhs in undoubtedly one of the best hitters in the country. She ranks 16th nationally and first in the SAC in kills per set (4.20) and 20th in division two in points per set (4.69). She also hits at a high clip. Ahsmuhs is 7th among SAC competitors in hitting percentage with a .286% mark. She also ranked 10th in the conference in digs per set (3.91).
Ahsmuhs and the Eagles take to the floor tonight, Tuesday, October 28th in Emory, Virgina looking for their 6th SAC win in a row.
