Fall Frosty Awards Nominees: Comeback of the Year

From now until Jan. 1, the Carson-Newman Athletic Communications Department will debut the Frosty Award nominees for the fall semester. These are the fall nominees for Comeback of the Year. New Year's Eve, we'll unveil the candidates for Male Athlete of the Year.

The fourth annual Frosty Awards will take place in April and honor athletic excellence in Carson-Newman's athletic department.

Men's Basketball v. UVA-Wise: Carson-Newman held UVA-Wise to two field goals in the final 8:30 of game action to rally from down six in the final three minutes and collect its first overtime win in two seasons, 96-91. UVA-Wise led 82-74 with 3:37 left in regulation, but Carson-Newman used a 9-1 run to tie things up at 83 and force overtime. Sawyer Williams (Owenton, Ky.) started the comeback with a whirly-gig layup with 3:14 to play. A Mason Bates (Cookeville, Tenn.) putback and Malik Abraham (Snellville, Ga.) finger roll brough the Eagles within a pair with 1:58 to play. After the Cav's Taiwo Badmus connected on the second of two free throws with 48 seconds left, the Eagles got the ball in Abraham's hands at the top of the key. The sophomore calmly buried a three to even the game. The overtime period started inauspiciously. UVA-Wise jumped out to a 5-0 run with a layin from Leandro Amador and a triple by Dimitri Sousa. Much like the end of the second half, C-N clamped down in overtime. UVA-Wise wouldn't hit another shot the rest of the way. Abraham gave the Eagles the lead, 89-88 with 1:17 to play on a triple from the right corner.

Women's Basketball v. USC Aiken: Carson-Newman trailed for 29:30 and started a 9-0 run with 3:27 to play in the game to the 30-second mark to overcome the deficit and top USC Aiken 84-78 on Nov. 11 at Tex Turner Arena. The Lady Eagles picked up a victory for just the eighth time in the Mike Mincey era in 53 outings when trailing with five minutes to play in the game. Kailyn Brooks finished the night with a team-high 24 points, four rebounds and four assists as one of three players in double figures.

Volleyball at Brevard: Carson-Newman fell behind 2-0 to Brevard on Oct. 7 at Boshamer Gymnasium before stampeding its opponent the rest of the night to pull out a five-set thriller 23-25, 16-25, 26-24, 25-19 and 15-13. Carson-Newman clubbed a .175 attack percentage with 91 digs, 13 total blocks and four service aces while Brevard countered with a .095 hitting clip, 95 digs, 14 service aces and seven total rejections. Marnie Streeter led the Eagles with 14 kills on a .233 attack percentage to go along with six digs. Abbie McFarlane chipped in her second double-double of the year with 13 kills and 13 digs. Taylor Lowe finished with 28 digs while junior setter Anna Patton added 41 assists and 11 digs.

Football v. Limestone: Carson-Newman rallied from a third quarter deficit for the first time in the last three years to snag a fifth consecutive Homecoming win, 39-25 over Limestone. The Eagles trailed by a point at the end of 45 minutes, but scored 15 unanswered fourth quarter points to cement the victory and get back into the win column. It marked Carson-Newman's second win since 2012 when trailing after three quarters. Coincidentally, the only other time its happened was also a homecoming game. The Eagles rallied to beat North Greenville 35-32 on homecoming in 2014. An Antonio Wimbush (Kingsland, Ga.) 20-yard TD run gave the Eagles a 24-12 advantage before Limestone got another TD from Fleming and a pick six from Joshua Simmons to take the lead with 2:50 left in the third quarter. However, the Eagles closed things down in the fourth. Darvia DuBose (Darlington, S.C.) caught a 28-yard TD pass from Suber and Wimbush used a second effort to get in on a two-yard trap play to cement the final score in favor of the Eagles 39-25.
