Eagles, Lady Eagles Turn in Strong Performances at Southeast Region Meet

HICKORY, N.C. — The Carson-Newman men's and women's track teams had a number of strong performances at the Southeast Regional meet held in Hickory, N.C. hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne over the weekend.

With all of the South Atlantic Conference schools in attendance, the Lady Eagles finished fourth in the region which was the second highest finish of any SAC school and the Eagles finished 5th in the region.

On the women's side, one school record fell as Tiffany Winchell (Jefferson City, Tenn.) set a new record in the 3000-meter steeplechase. The old record was set last season by Cara Hawkins.

Catelyn Dake (Knoxville, Tenn.) matched her school record in the 400-meter run and won the Southeast Regional in the 800-meter run. In the SAC, Dake won the 800 for the third consecutive time as she scored points in four events for the team.

Chelsie Woods (Bristol, Va.) was SAC champ in the 100-meter dash and long jump. Winchell won the SAC 3000-meter steeplechase, Brooke Earhart (Dixon, Tenn.) won the 5000-meter run and Brittany Burleson (Bristol, Va.) was the SAC discus champ.

The mile relay team of Kellan Clay (Jefferson City, Tenn.), Winchell, Rachel Logemann (Seminole, Fla.) and Dake won the SAC, marking the fourth consecutive season the women have won the conference in that event and the second fastest time in C-N history. In every running event from the 100 through the 10,000-meter run, the women had a top three SAC finish. (100M -1st, 200 – 2nd, 400 – 2nd, 800 – 1st, 1500 – 3rd, 3000 SC – 1st, 5000 – 1st, 10000 – 2nd)

For the men, Preston Young (LaFollette, Tenn.) finished in a tie for first place in the region in the shot put. In the SAC, Solomon Duanah (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Young were SAC champs in the 100 and shot put, respectively.

Stephen Brown (Washington, D.C.) finished second in both the SAC and Region in the high jump with his best mark of the season. Antonio Gomez (Brewton, Ala.) led the men's team with points in three events.

The teams return to action in the Tennessee Invitational at the University of Tennessee on May 8.
