Eagles' bullpen shuts down Davis & Elkins in 6-5 win

AIKEN, S.C. – Carson-Newman's Brandon Timmerman and Ryan Fillers combined for three shutout innings of relief and Kyle Koeneman hit his second home run of the week as the Eagles beat Davis & Elkins College, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon.

Carson-Newman improves to 3-4 with the win.

Timmerman came on in the seventh and allowed only a hit-by-pitch in two innings of work. He struck out three.

Fillers followed by facing the minimum in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season. He induced a game-ending double play to close the game out after surrendering a one-out single.

The Eagles put up three runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead and would not trail the rest of the way.

Junior Lucas Mohon led the frame off with a double to left field. Zach Long followed with an RBI triple to right field to tie the game at one.

Centerfield Ryan Hanks added an RBI single and shortstop Trace Rogers followed with a RBI double as the Eagles strung together four straight hits.

Koeneman added to the Eagles' lead in the fourth, belting his second home run of the season, a two-run shot, over the left field fence. Rogers also had a single, his second hit of the day, to lead off the inning.

Freshman Evan Jurjevic scored the game winning run in the seventh after reaching on a D&E error.

An infield single from C-N's Bryan Everhart and a wild pitch from Davis and Elkins brough around Jurjevic to give the C-N a 6-5 lead.

Timmerman and Fillers shut down the D&E offense the rest of the way to preserve the win.

Rogers, Koeneman, and Mohon all had two hits for the Eagles, who were outhit by D&E, 11-10. C-N, however, had four of the game's five extra base hits.

Evan Faithful struck out three and allowed three earned runs in 4.0 innings as the Eagles' starter.
