Eagles pound out season highs against Pfeiffer, 21-8

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Three Carson-Newman freshmen hit their first career home runs and Kyle Koeneman hit his 13th of the season as the Eagles pounded on visiting Pfeiffer, 21-8, on Wednesday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.

C-N's 21 runs scored is the most in two seasons since a 21-8 win over Lenoir-Rhyne in March of 2010. The Eagles move back to .500 with the win, while Pfeiffer falls to 17-15.

The season series between the two teams ends at 1-1. Strangely, the Eagles managed one hit in a 2-0 loss to the Falcons in February before hammering out a season-high 17 hits and 21 home runs, along with four home runs, on Wednesday.

Carson-Newman sucked the drama out of the midweek affair in the first three innings. The Eagles plated 14 runs, highlighted by a six-run second inning, to blow the game open early.

The first four Eagles of the of the game reached as Pfeiffer starter Keith Little allowed a lead off single to Philllip Duncan and hit Koeneman, Lucas Mohon, and Bo Ausmus all with pitches as the Eagles scored four runs with on only Duncan's single.

The C-N offense got rolling in the second inning as Zach Long delieverd an RBI triple to capitalize on a leadoff walk. Ausmus followed with his first career home run as the hometown product ripped a two-run blast to build the lead out to 7-0.

Third baseman Lance Rorex added a two-run double and Cody Fox followed with an RBU double of hs own as C-N built a 14-1 run after three innings.

Fox kept his tear of late going in the sixth as he ripped his first career home run. The two run shot scored Koeneman and was part of a 3-for-4 day for the freshman who had a C-N season-high six RBIs.

C-N added two more home runs in its final at bat. Fhreshman Bryan Everhart had a pinch-hit solo shot for his first career shot and Koeneman capped the day's fireworks with a memorable bomb.

The senior obliterated his 13th home run well beyond the left field fence to put an exclamation point on a 4-for-5 day in which he reached five times and scored five runs.

Five Eagles had multiple hits in the win.

Six Eagle pitchers got work in the win. Sophomore Brandon Timmerman (WP, 2-2) picked up the win after an effective start.

Carson-Newman returns to South Atlantic Conference action on Friday against Catawba. First pitch is at 6 p.m. in Salisbury, N.C.
