Reed's six RBIs carries Eagles past Mars Hill, 13-3

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman's Lance Reed had a three-run double and six RBIs to lead the Eagles to a 13-3 win over Mars Hill on Friday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.

With the win, the Eagles move above .500 at 14-13 and are now 8-5 in South Atlantic Conference play. Mars Hill falls to 9-18 and 4-9 in the SAC.

Reed's first hit of the afternoon came as part of a five-run sixth inning as the Eagles rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take control. The junior drove an offering from Mars Hill reliever Tony Hearrell into the gap in left center to give the Eagles their first lead of the game at 5-2.

C-N tied the game earlier in the inning as Cody Fox singled and scored on a double down the right-field line by shortstop Troy Zawadzki. Fox had three hits on the day and scored three times.

C-N added five more runs in the seventh as Phillip Duncan found the gap in left center for a two-run double. Reed added a two-run single in the inning as C-N took advantage of two walks and two hit batsmen.

The Eagles struggled to execute offensively in the first five innings, stranding nine runners before finally breaking through.

C-N's Zach Long first inning double gave the Eagles a chance to score in the opening frame, but Long was caught trying to steal home on a ball in the dirt in front of Lions' catcher Matt Mayo. Mayo bounced up and tagged out long with a diving effort to keep the Eagles scoreless for the moment.

The Lions broke through in the second inning as Coty Pate delivered a lead off double and scored on a RBI double from leftfielder Chris Peek, who doubled off the wall in right. Tyler Reboulet added a sacrifice fly to plate Peek as the Lions took a 2-0 lead.

Eagle starter Robbie Thigpen worked eight innings and allowed three earned runs to move to 4-1 on the year. Ryan Fillers came on to pitch a scoreless ninth.

Reliever Tony Hearrell took the loss for the Lions.

Senior Kyle Koeneman was 1-for-2 for the Eagles, but drew four walks and scored twice. He had a two-run double in the eighth.

Reed led the Eagles with six RBIs and was 2-for-3.

Pate was 2-for-4 for the Lions, as was Joey Belviso, who had an RBI double in the eighth. C-N took advantage of 10 walks and three hit batsmen by Mars Hill pitchers.

The two teams will play a doubleheader in Saturday. First pitch is at noon in Jefferson City.
