Eagles leave the last meet of the regular season with first-place finishes against Division I GA Tech

ATLANTA, Ga.- Henrique Januario and Kyla Blakemore take home first-place finishes from Georgia Tech.

The Eagles ended the meet this afternoon with a final score of 149.5 to Georgia Tech's 370.5. Carson-Newman women's swim contributed 72.5 points to the overall team score, while the men added 77 points.

"Overall, it was a great meet with some solid swims. Henrique, Eli, and Hobson had awesome swims across the board on the men's side," head coach for the swim team Ben Young said.

Henrique Januario finished first in the men's 200-yard breaststroke with a finals time of 2:01.67.

In the men's 400-yard medley relay, Januario raced with teammates Tyler Schehr, Will Humphreys, and Ridge McCay to finish second with a time of 3:22.21. Januario continued to find success in the 200-yard freestyle with a third place finish (1:40.69). Will Humphreys also placed third in the men's 200-yard butterfly in 1:55.24, and Eli Poole finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:50.93.

Matt George snagged silver in the men's 100-yard backstroke with a final time of 50.88. Another top-two finish came from Hobson Stelling in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.22. Arthur Gluzman stood on the podium for his third-place finish in the men's 50-yard freestyle (20.84).

"The women had great swims coming from Kyla, Rachel, and Lillian Hilt," Young said.

Kyla Blakemore won gold in the women's 200-yard backstroke in 2:00.91. Lillian Hilt placed fourth in the event with a time of 2:08.25. Hilt also placed third in the women's 200-yard IM (2:15.63) finishing shortly behind her teammate Chrisman Rand who finished in 2:10.99 for silver. Rachel Peden finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:06.46.

Manon Compagner finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with her 58.32 second swim. Compagner also had a fourth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (24.49).

"There were great moments and some things to clean up and fix. I was disappointed to see some poor mistakes during a few of our races, but this is why we have these meets just outside of Conference. It gives us the opportunity to make the mistakes without the added pressure of a championship meet, learn from them, and move on so that we don't continue to make them. We are looking forward to getting back in the water tomorrow, shaking it out a bit, and completely shifting our focus to fully prepare for the last, and most exciting, part of the season," Young said.

The Eagles will race again at the South Atlantic Conference Championships beginning Wednesday, Feb. 8.
