Eagles roll to win over University of the Cumberlands in opener, 7-2

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Eagles won five singles matches to overpower the University of the Cumberlands, 7-2, in their 2012 season opener on Friday afternoon.

C-N won singles matches at No. 2 through No. 6 to roll to a season-opening win at the C-N Tennis Complex.

Freshman Warren McClure (Marietta, Ga.) defeated Danilo Garcia 4-6, 7-6 (9), 6-4 in a 3-hour battle match and an impressive debut for the C-N newcomer.

The Eagles got off to a quick start taking two of the three doubles matches. At No. 2 doubles, Dusty Davis (Morristown, TN) and Derek Holdway (Woodstock, Ga.)won 8-3, and freshmen Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) and  Garret Duron (Woodstock, Ga.) won by the same score at No. 3 doubles. 

Holdway won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles as the Eagles went 5-1 in singles matches.

Carson-Newman faces Lee University on Saturday at  18 11:45 a.m. in Jefferson City.
