Men’s tennis drops close match to Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. – Juan Perez (Ecuador) pulled out a big win at no. 1 singles after a third-set tiebreaker against Alex Macdonald 4-6, 6-3, 12-10 but Carson-Newman (2-4, 0-2 SAC) fell just shy of a SAC win dropping a 4-5 match to Catawba (10-5, 1-1 SAC) on Friday.

At no. 2 singles, Paul Birdsong (Woodstock, Ga.) battled hard against Jess Goodall winning in two sets 6-4, 6-3 to string together back-to-back wins and move to 2-2 for his senior campaign. Jonathan Allen (Lenoir City, Tenn.) beat Jack Mordey with a 6-0, 6-2 decision in the no. 5 singles spot.

Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) saw serve broken on him twice in a close match at no. 3 singles against Matthew Nicholson before falling to a 6-4, 6-4 final score. Dalton Moore (Gate City, Va.) and Aaron Vanhorenbeck battled at no. 5 singles but Catawba's Indian came out on top 6-2, 6-2.

The no. 1 doubles team of Perez and Mackay snapped a three-game losing streak in defeating Macdonald and Nicholson 8-2.

Birdsong and Derek Holdway (Woodstock, Ga.) had a close match at no. 2 singles against Mordey and Mitchell McDonald but fell with a final score of 8-6. Allen and Moore also neared victory but could not find the win resulting with a 9-7 decision at the third doubles spot.
