Staalby, Herrity sweep Chick-Fil-A Athlete of the Week honors for soccer

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman men's soccer's Marius Staalby (Trondheim, Norway) and women's soccer's Julianne Herrity (Donegal, Ireland) have been named the Chick-Fil-A Male and Female Athletes of the Week.   

Junior Marius Staalby (Trondheim, Norway) recorded his first-career multi-goal game as the Norwegian tallied two goals against Newberry.

Staalby opened the scoring in the sixth-minute with a one-on-one goal set up by freshman Bruno Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil); Staalby took the through ball from Andrade, took a shot that was saved and cleaned up his saved shot for his first goal of the year. His second goal of the game from a penalty kick that the junior drew by getting fouled in the 18-yard box. 

Carson-Newman junior forward Julianne Herrity's (Donegal, Ireland) was named the South Atlantic Conference's AstroTurf Player of the Week by the league on Monday after leading the Eagles with three goals to their first 2-0 start in league play for the first time since 2009.

Herrity's award is the first Player of the Week honor awarded to an Eagle since All-American Morgan Gruenenfelder was granted the accolade on Nov. 2nd, 2010.

Herrity opened her week with her first of two game-winning goals in the 103rd-minute as the Eagles' upset No. 13 Lenoir-Rhyne in double overtime; the junior recorded three shots on Wednesday.

On Saturday against Newberry, Herrity tallied two goals, her first multi-goal game of her career, on six shots. Herrity's first goal of the game game came off a header in the 50th-minute that was assisted by junior Megan Peterson (Parrish, Fla.) and freshman Averi Williams (Knoxville, Tenn.).

Herrity added her second game-winner of the week with a low shot to the left post after junior Elissa Lane's (Knoxville, Tenn.) low cross bounced through the box and landed at Herrity's feet.
