KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the first time since the preseason poll in 2010, the Carson-Newman women's soccer team (11-2) is ranked in the most recent edition of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll as the Eagles entered the rankings at 24th.
A 2-1 double-overtime win over Young Harris on Wednesday and a 1-0 shutout of ninth-ranked Wingate pushed the Eagles into the top-25. Last week, C-N was receiving votes.
The last time Carson-Newman appeared in the ranking during the regular season was in 2009 when the Eagles ended the year 11th and were champions of the South Atlantic Conference regular season title. That year, the Eagles won the SAC Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight.
Carson-Newman is the lone SAC team in the top-25. The Bulldogs fell out of the rankings after the loss to C-N. Two teams from the Southeast region, Columbus State and North Georgia, are ranked higher than the Eagles; the Cougars and Nighthawks each play in the Peach Belt Conference.
Gannon, the lone unbeaten and untied team in the nation, is ranked first with a perfect 14-0-0 recod. Western Washington, Grand Valley State, Angelo State and Bridgeport round out the top-five.
Carson-Newman returns to the pitch on Wednesday afternoon as the Eagles head to face instate rival King (Tenn.) at Parks Field in Bristol. The Tornado's athletic communications department will provide video and live stats for the match.
