Carson-Newman Volleyball Defeats King, 3-2, In 2009 Home Finale Tuesday

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman College Volleyball Team (19-7) kept their win streak alive Tuesday night as the Lady Eagles defeated the King College Tornado (21-8) by a 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 28-30, 15-8) score at Holt Fieldhouse. The match was the final regular season home contest for C-N this year. With the win, Carson-Newman evened the season series with King at 1-1.

King took the 1-0 lead after the first set behind a .205 (15-6-44) hitting percentage. C-N senior middle Katie Troyer (Plain City, Ohio) had six kills in the frame despite the loss.

Carson-Newman equalized in the second set thanks to five kills from junior outside hitter Carly Mozgai (Greensboro, N.C.). Mogzai also had a five-point serving run as well for the Lady Eagles.

C-N extended its lead to 2-1 after three sets. The Lady Eagles got out to a five-point lead, but a six point serving run by the Tornado brought the match back to equal at 14-14. With the score tied at 20, Carson-Newman scored five of the next seven points to take the stanza.

The fourth set, which featured 12 ties and four lead changes, ended up going past the 25-point mark. Mogzai and Troyer combined for nine kills while freshman libero Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, Tenn.) had 11 digs in the frame for the Lady Eagles. King outlasted C-N by the 30-28 score to force the fifth and deciding set.

With the score tied at four in the fifth set, Carson-Newman scored five straight points to take control at 9-4. The Lady Eagles held on for the 15-8 victory and took the match victory.

Troyer led all players with 20 kills and added six blocks while Mozgai tallied 18 kills of her own for C-N. Senior setter Stephanie Cutter (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) posted a team-high 31 assists while junior Lara McDonald (Salem, Va.) dished out 25 of her own. Hayes had a match-high 31 digs while freshman middle Jasmine Clark (Pelham, Ala.) led all players with seven blocks.

King was led offensively by Sarah Van Goethem (Aurora, Colo.) and Morgan Machen (Kingsport, Tenn.) with 16 kills each. Machen completed the double-double with 10 digs. Katie Fleming (Marietta, Ga.) had a match-high 50 assists while Rachel Harding (Abingdon, Va.) tallied 25 digs to lead the Tornado.

Carson-Newman will round out the South Atlantic Conference regular season this weekend with two matches. The Lady Eagles will play the Bulldogs of Wingate University Friday at 7:00 p.m., and will take on the Lady Indians of Catawba College on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
