Efficient offense guides Eagles to sweep over Cobras

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman volleyball (13-15, 10-6 SAC) honored their eight graduating seniors on Friday night with a dominating performance over the Coker Cobras (3-21, 0-16 SAC) in Holt Fieldhouse. 

"They all bring something so different to the program." said head coach Ashley Tiernan "Its been such a blessing to be able to coach them for however long that I've had them. Being able to celebrate them tonight, it's a win no matter what."

As a unit, the Eagles performed a season high .398 hitting efficiency and kept Coker down to only .109. They led the Cobras in kills (50-25), digs (43-40), assists (41-24), and service aces (4-0), The teams tied with 4.0 blocks apiece. 

Senior Julia Wheeler led the match with 16 kills and a suffocating .341 hitting percentage, good for a season high. 

On her senior night, Ella Gay recorded a career high eight kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Taylor Keeran also had eight with a .333 efficiency. 

Player of the game Madison Fisher collected a career high seven kills on Friday night in fifteen attempts. She led the Eagles and the Cobras defensively with 12 digs.

"I'm just grateful to be here and play with this great group of girls." said Fisher. "We had a lot of seniors on the court and I think we were playing for eachother tonight."

Set 1 (25-19)

The Eagles popped ahead in set one with a 10-3 lead over the Cobras. Coker managed to close within three points at 13-10 but could not put enough pressure on a firey offense from Carson-Newman. The Eagles swung .263 with 16 kills , while the Cobras swung .000 for eight kills. Madison Fisher and Julia Wheeler led with four kills each. 

Set 2 (25-13)

In their most dominating set, Carson-Newman again grabbed a large lead early on and did not allow more than seven kills from Coker offense. 

Set 3 (25-16)

Even with Coker's most efficent offensive and defensive performance of the night with 10 kills and 17 digs, they could not hold off a persistent Carson-Newman volleyball squad, fighting for a sweep. The Eagles swung .395 in set three, gathering 17 kills, 13 blocks, and three service aces to wrap up the evening and taking their seventh home court victory of the season. 

Carson-Newman will stay on the banks of Mossy Creek for their final home match of the season, against Limestone on Monday at 6 pm.
