Eagles come up short against Trojans

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – After an emotional five set loss Friday evening, the Carson-Newman Eagles (9-13, 4-11 South Atlantic Conference) fell to the Anderson (S.C.) Trojans in four sets 25-7, 25-21, 25-22 and 25-17 Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse.

The Eagles showed signs of a hangover as they fell behind early and watched the Trojans score 18 of 20 points to run away with the initial stanza that saw the Trojans hit .625 compared to a -.095 attack percentage for Carson-Newman.

"In the first set, we knew we were a little discombobulated," head coach Shannon Mincey said of the slow start. "I needed to pull my first group out and talk to them on the sideline. We chalked that up as a wash. Our defense did a fantastic job in the second set keeping the ball alive and allowing our offense to run a little quicker."

Carson-Newman found its groove in the second set storming back after trailing most of the set. Behind 18-12, the Eagles began a comeback and were able to take their first lead of the match on a kill by junior outside hitter Lauren Santarelli (Colorado Springs, Colo.) to go on top 21-20. An attack error by the Trojans gave the Eagles a second set victory.

Mincey's group used four blocks and a .250 attack percentage thanks to five kills from Santarelli and 11 assists from junior setter Kristen Pickett (Cleveland, Tenn.).

The third set saw eight ties with Carson-Newman holding the lead much of the way. Anderson took its first lead at 18-17 and never trailed again in the set winning on a service ace.

Junior outside hitter Rachel Harper (Chattanooga, Tenn.) racked up five kills and six digs while senior right side Emily Schultz (Atlanta, Ga.) added five kills.

The Trojans surged out to an early advantage in the fourth frame racing to a 9-4 lead before calling a timeout. The Eagles were able to close the gap to two points, but could never pull closer.

Harper compiled her 12th double-double of the campaign finishing with 10 kills and 12 digs. Pickett finished a dig shy of a double-double as she racked up 29 assists halting a streak of eight straight matches with at least 30 helpers.

Santarelli added nine kills and ten digs while Schultz tallied eight kills, a solo block and two block assists.

"I wish our hitters would transition a little bit more in terms of options," Mincey said of the team's offensive attack. "I'm hoping that we can work this week on terminating quicker. We are fortunate to be at home this weekend."

The Eagles return to action next Friday as they play host to Wingate at 7 p.m. with a home match against Coker at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
