Eagles come out strong at Greensboro Invitational

GREENSOBORO, N.C.—Carson-Newman's cross country teams each picked up third place finishes  Saturday morning at the Greensboro Invitational.

Hannah Reese (Brandon, Miss.) led the women's team finishing 4th overall with a time of 20:26.

"Hannah was in the lead pack the entire race, but she settled back into fourth through the 2-mile and was just out of touch to try a late surge," Carson-Newman head cross country coach Whitney Lee said.

Amanda Bowman (Greeneville, Tenn.) finished 14th overall and improved her time from 22:14 in her last race to 21:40 – a mark that ties her personal best this season.

"We had a good performance from Amanda Bowman, I'm thrilled to see Bowman perform so well," Lee said.

Samantha McConeghey (Johnston, Iowa) finished 22nd overall with a time of 22:22, posting her second best time of the season and improving from her C-N XC Challenge 22:57 performance.

"It was a race-time decision to not have Stephanie Savino (Southold, N.Y.) go for us due to some IT band trouble; a possible pinched nerve in lower back," said Lee.  "That set us back a bit, but the ladies responded well to fill that void in our No. three and four positions."

Luke Hall (Seymour, Tenn.) led the men with a 13th overall performance posting a time of 29:53.

Angel Soriano (Weatherford, Tex.) and Jonathan Chastain (Knoxville, Tenn.) had a pair of solid outings posting times of 30:54 and 31:32. They finished  20th and 26th, respectively

Mark Edwards responded from his C-N XC Challenge performance of 32:50 by posting a personal best with a time of 32:00 – good for 28th overall.

"We had a couple of good races from Jonathan Chastain and Mark Edwards," said Lee.  "I continue to be encouraged by how they are adjusting to the longer race (8k) as compared to their recent high school days of 5k."

The Eagles will next head to Baxter, Tenn., on October 5th for the Tennessee Tech Invitational at the Southern Hills Golf Course.  The women will start their race first, at 4:00 p.m., with the men following at 4:45 p.m.
